Psycho City
Trudy and Phil ordered carry-out in the turnpike island restaurant and got back in the Trans Am.
âWhen I was a kid,â Phil said, before he started the engine, âwe stopped here and had to sit down in the restaurant to eat. No carry out. It was a big deal restaurant. People came here for special occasions, when it was new. About the only other thing I remember is that they told me Wilt Chamberlain built the turnpike.â
âWho?â
âFamous basketball player, once upon a time.â
âWait! Wasnât he the tall dude in Conan the Destroyer?â She gestured at her T-shirt.
âYeah!â
âHow could he have built the Kansas Turnpike?â
âHe played ball for KU, University of Kansas, the Jayhawks, up the road in Lawrence.â
âSo?â
âPeople paid the toll on this road, after it was built, to get there faster to see him play.â
âAnd the tolls helped pay for this fucking road?â
âYeah.â
âOkay. Iâm set to play Kansas trivia with the big boys, now.â
Phil turned the key in the ignition. The Trans Amâs healthy engine rumbled to life.
Trudy started on her hamburger.
Phil drove to the turnpike service station near the restaurant and put in gas. Then they rejoined the four lane turnpike and headed north once more.
âNext stop, Wichita,â Phil announced, seeing a mileage sign. âShould be there in a half-hour or so. Want to stop for the night? Get a motel?â
âSounds good to me.â
âWhen you going to tell me about what you read today?â Phil asked around a mouthful of hamburger. âWant to wait until weâre in the motel?â Steering one-handed, he fumbled with his fries then stuffed several in his mouth.
Trudy swallowed her last bite of hamburger and said, âMight as well tell you now. No reason to wait. Actually, after reading several of those books, the basics are pretty much what you heard Liz tell me in the playroom. The Countess tortured young women and bathed in their blood. Well, to be fair, one book pointed out that thereâs no actual evidence for the blood bathing. It is not mentioned in the trial records. But what Liz didnât tell me was how Erzsebet died.â
âThey executed her?â
âNo. After Darvuliaâs death, another supposed sorceress advised her to switch from peasants to nobles. Their blood would be richer.â
âYouâre kidding.â
âNo. It was a long time ago.â
âNo shit.â
âAnyway, Erzsebet was so strung out by then that she took the advice. The authorities had to do something when the complaints about missing girls came from aristocrats instead of peasants.â
âNo one cared if she killed peasants?â
âOnly the peasants.â
âWho didnât count.â
âNot to the authorities, I guess. It wasââ
âA long time ago,â he finished, âin a galaxy far, far away.â
âWrong movie.â
âYeah, but they should make a movie about Erzsebet. Wow.â
âThey have. Youâve never seen one? Horror movie guy that you are?â
He shrugged and stuffed more fries in his mouth. âDonât remember one.â
âSeveral are listed in one of these books. Iâll show you, later. But back to history, Erzsebet was not executed, but she was imprisoned, in her own bedroom. The door and the windows were bricked up except for slits at the tops of the windows for air and a food hole in the door.
